Johannesburg expands its urban forest

All over Soweto, people like Alice are adding greenery to their surroundings. When the township was originally built in the 1940s by the apartheid government, it was intended to be a place where black people would live on a temporary basis. They would inhabit the small brick houses only while their employment contracts were valid. They were supposed to live in Soweto only in order to be able to work for white people in Johannesburg.

Since 2006, however, there has been a massive effort to extend this forest into Soweto. The Soweto Greening Project began that year with 6,000 trees being planted. The aim is to plant 200,000 trees throughout the township to give the residents a green environment

Khayelitsha Climbers to Ascend Kilimanjaro

Dr Ivan Meyer, Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport, invited two mountain climbers from Khayelitsha, Loyiso Koyana and Luwanda Mxosana, to meet him 11 November 2010 on top of Table Mountain minutes before he and Jenny Hartnick, Chairperson of the Western Cape Provincial Standing Committee on Education, Cultural Affairs and Sport, sent an SMS to vote for Table Mountain in the New7Wonders campaign.

The Department of Cultural Affairs & Sport is prepared to assist with the facilitation of any form of sponsorship to make the dream of these aspiring mountaineers come true. This will, in turn, translate into creating opportunities for those who would not otherwise have had similar dreams and opportunities.

He was with a team of men(committee) from All Saints Cathedral, Nairobi. The project is located in the edge of Kibera Slum.

Our club RCS Gugulethu Athletics Club will be hosting its annual 10km race on the 16^th December again. This year’s event promises to be even bigger and better. The race this year is in its 10^th year. The race started off in 2000 and then it was called Amy Biehl Reconciliation Day Race. As you will recall Amy Biehl was the exchange student who met her untimely death during those turbulent years in our townships. We named the race after her to try and bring that reconciliation amongst the people of Mzantsi.
